The tweeter is a titanium dome with an acoustic lens waveguide that extends up to 24kHz. It’s supported by a rubber surround that allows for plenty of excursion. This is essentially a super compacted, finely-ground wood pulp that is extremely light and thin. JBL studio monitors of old would have had paper cone woofers but the L52s use pure pulp. The back of the cabinet has a pair of threaded fittings that accept M6 bolts. Or you can mount them on the wall using an aftermarket bracket. JBL makes stands for them that have a layer of dense foam to isolate the speaker from the stand. I would not recommend putting any speaker on a shelf where the cabinet was in direct contact. The cabinets don’t have threaded fittings for them either. One thing I found unusual is that the L52 does not come with feet. The knuckle rap test reveals a solid piece with little to no chance of sound coloration from chassis vibration. The cabinets are relatively light but very sturdy. If you stand mount them as I did, JBL recommends 24 inches of height to get the tweeters close to ear level. This placement means you can actually put the L52s on a shelf without coloring the sound. Bass extension is greater than the small cabinet’s size would suggest thanks to the front-firing port. It covers frequencies from 47Hz to 24kHz using a 5.25-inch pure pulp woofer and a 0.75-inch titanium dome tweeter. The L52 Classic is a traditional two-way ported cabinet design. Or mount them on the wall using the threaded fittings in the back. Since the port is in front, you can put them on a bookshelf without coloring the sound. The L52 is retro in appearance but intended to deliver sound befitting modern spaces and to pair with the latest electronics. JBL calls it Quadrex which refers to the grid pattern molded into the foam. Once the grille goes on though, it’s like stepping into a time machine. Likewise, the tweeter is titanium with a waveguide. The old speaker’s woofer would have been made from paper, but today’s L52 Classic uses a much stiffer pulp material. It is made with modern materials and engineered from the ground up using contemporary design techniques and tuning. Of course, the L52 Classic is only a cosmetic recreation of a vintage speaker. They had the same foam grilles and walnut cabinets that come with the L52 Classic Bookshelf Speakers I’m reviewing today. I could clearly see the mixing board and the two JBL studio monitors that sat on either side of it. It doubled as a recording studio and on one side was a large window where the engineer could look out into the room. I have a vivid memory of my first music job and the rehearsal space I played in every day. A small cabinet covered in real walnut veneer fits on a stand or shelf thanks to a front-mounted port and relatively shallow depth. The Quadrex foam grille recalls analog audio of the past while modern materials like a titanium dome tweeter and a pure pulp 5.25” woofer deliver audio that delivers way above its modest price of $1,000 a pair. JBL’s L52 Classic Bookshelf Speaker packs modern technology into a classically styled cabinet that marries a retro look with reference-level sound quality. Vigorous activity burns more than six METs per minute.) Moderate intensity activities burn three to six times more energy per minute as sitting quietly. (One MET equals the amount of energy you would burn while sitting quietly. The participants started the walking test at 0.5 miles per hour and increased their speed at 0.5 mph increments until they began to run, reached 75 percent of their predicted maximum heart rate or reported they were finding the activity “somewhat hard.”Īfter participants reached “moderate intensity” walking speed of 100 steps per minute, each increase of 10 steps per minute was associated with a boost in energy intensity of one MET (metabolic equivalent). To assess how fast they could walk for exercise, the researchers had the participants complete a series of five-minute walks on a treadmill, then rest for two minutes while they calculated the cadence and intensity of the exercise via a portable indirect calorimeter. They found the natural walking pace of 90 percent of the recruits was more than 100 steps per minute. To gather data for the study, the researchers recruited 10 men and 10 women for each five-year age increment between 21 and 40. To determine walking speed, the researchers proposed a simple solution – count your steps for 15 seconds, then multiply by four. (140 steps or more per minute equals running). The researchers concluded that for adults from age 21 to 40 walking about 100 steps per minute constitutes moderate exercise, while taking 130 steps or more per minute is vigorous exercise. We will try to explain the real facts and history of Babylon and Mesopotamia as we discuss the Hanging Gardens. This period of history unlike modern history is very contentious among religion and academia and even within academia itself. It is also important to understand the history of Mesopotamia and early civilization. But first it is important to understand where the misconceptions occurred that obscured this Wonder of the Ancient World for nearly 3 millennium. No, there is no myth or legend regarding the Hanging Gardens and they were documented to have existed even by Alexander the Great as late as 331 BC. So where did this idea of a Hanging Gardens existing in Babylon come from? Is it simply a myth that turned into legend and has no basis in history? However, even subsequent modern excavations have failed to yield any evidence of gardens existing at Babylon. As part of their research they attempted to locate any evidence of the gardens as something of this magnitude would leave all sorts of archaeological evidence. These trees were most likely indigenous to the areas surrounding the Middle East and were probably collected from throughout the Empire and its vast trading networks.Ī fascination with the Gardens brought German researchers to come excavate Babylon in the late 19th century. Instead the Gardens were full of trees that towered high over the landscape along with all sorts of exotic plants and animals within the structure itself. The flora of the Hanging Gardens of Babylon was unique in that it did not contain typical flowers and small plants. Towering over 400 feet above the flat landscape, this would have been a structure seen from miles away. Regardless of the massive Walls of Babylon and the Ishtar Gate, the 300 foot high ziggurat, the Tower of Babel and all of the beautiful architecture and cultural displays that existed at Babylon, every traveler would have been amazed of seeing the Kings palace with all sorts of vegetation spilling out over the sides. Hanging Gardens of Babylon - Ferdinand Knab (1834-1902) Under these conditions a trading hub of the ancient world flourished. Due to the cities mastery of water, there are canals that run through the city supplied by the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers and there is enough food and water to support a massive population. How could you not revere this civilization for after wandering through the barren desert for miles and miles, suddenly this massive city rises out of the sands, an oasis respite from the harsh conditions. The civilizations of Mesopotamia began appearing in history around 6,000 BC had been around for several millennium at the time of the Greeks which would have been considered ancient by their standards. While the people who wrote the Bible condemned Babylon, all of the Greek and other foreign writers spoke of Babylon in reverence and awe as they were amazed at how successful and old the cities were. In fact they were written about by Greeks in the third century BC as a must see spot around the known world for travelers following the conquest of the Achaemenid Empire by Alexander the Great. Hanging Gardens of Babylon - 19th Century Engraving The Gardens themselves were beautiful and written about several times in antiquity. So did the Hanging Gardens of Babylon really exist then? The Hanging Gardens are the only one of the ancient wonders that have been discussed but not been found which means they most likely existed. However, one big problem with discussing the gardens is they have never been found and there is not any evidence for them at Babylon despite much efforts and excavation. It was through the Babylonians mastery of water and engineering that they were able to create such a magnificent structure. The Hanging Gardens of Babylon existed at the city of Babylon in the civilization of Babylonia. Even to this day the mystery of the Hanging Gardens of Babylon has kept civilization captivated ever since it was first written about. A terraced garden featuring exotic plants and animals from all throughout the world, towering nearly 400 feet off the ground must have been a wondrous site throughout the ancient world. Thinking about the Hanging Gardens of Babylon invokes wonderful images of a time and place long since past. Premium aids can cost as much as $6,000 per ear. This should mean far lower costs for most consumers since traditional hearing aids can run $2,000 to $4,000 a pair, according to Kate Carr, president of the Hearing Industries Association trade group in Washington, D.C. Not only do these long-anticipated devices let millions of adults with mild to moderate hearing loss purchase hearing aids without a prescription, they also don’t require an exam or consultation with an audiologist or doctor. But shopping for these hearing aids, which are also sold online, may not be quite as simple as going to the drugstore to buy aspirin or even reading glasses. Pharmacies and other retailers began to stock OTC hearing aids in mid-October. For the species name, he used a different name, as tautonyms (repetition of exactly the same name in the genus and species) are not permitted in botanical naming. Philip Miller, in his Gardener's Dictionary, considered that the jujube and its relatives were sufficiently distinct from Rhamnus to be placed in a separate genus (as it had already been by the pre-Linnaean author Tournefort in 1700), and in the 1768 edition he gave it the name Ziziphus jujuba (using Tournefort's spelling for the genus name). It was first named in the binomial system by Carl Linnaeus as Rhamnus zizyphus, in Species Plantarum (1753). The binomial name has a curious nomenclatural history, due to a combination of botanical naming regulations, and variations in spelling. This name is not related to jojoba, which is a loan from Spanish jojoba, itself borrowed from hohohwi, the name of that plant in a Native American language. A descendant of the Latin word into a Romance language, which may have been French jujube or medieval Latin jujuba, in turn gave rise to the common English jujube. This was borrowed into Classical Latin as zizyphum (used for the fruit) and zizyphus (the tree). The ultimate source of the name is Ancient Greek ζίζυφον zízyphon. Terpenoids such as colubrinic acid and alphitolic acid were found in the fruits. įlavinoids found in the fruits include Kaempferol 3-O-rutinoside, Quercetine 3-O-robinobioside, Quercetine 3-O-rutinoside. Leaves contain saponin and ziziphin, which suppresses the ability to perceive sweet taste. There is a single hard kernel, similar to an olive pit, containing two seeds. The fruit is an edible oval drupe 1.5–3 cm ( 5⁄ 8– 1 + 1⁄ 8 in) deep when immature it is smooth-green, with the consistency and taste of an apple with lower acidity, maturing brown to purplish-black, and eventually wrinkled, looking like a small date. The flowers are small, 5 millimetres ( 1⁄ 4 in) wide, with five inconspicuous yellowish-green petals. The leaves are shiny-green, ovate-acute, 2–7 centimetres ( 3⁄ 4– 2 + 3⁄ 4 inches) long and 1–3 cm ( 3⁄ 8– 1 + 1⁄ 8 in) wide, with three conspicuous veins at the base, and a finely toothed margin. It is a small deciduous tree or shrub reaching a height of 5–12 metres (16–39 feet), usually with thorny branches.
